Kept by Edward Richard Archer while in London, England, Paris, France, Hamilton, Bermuda, Havana, Cuba, St. Marks, Florida, and Charlotte and Greensboro, North Carolina, this diary contains entries describing his journey through Europe, to Bermuda and Cuba, and finally to the United States. Included in the diary are entries concerning the surrender of the Confederate Army of Tennessee to the Union Army under the command of William Tecumseh Sherman in April 1865, and iron products manufactured at the Tredegar Iron Works, Richmond, Va.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829.
